[SSL], or Secure Socket Layer, encrypts the connection between your computer and our network. This makes sniffing/hacking you harder (although not impossible). It is required for all network staff to use SSL.
- mIRC didn't support SSL until version 6.14, and even then requires an additional library to be installed.
- For mIRC, follow the [instructions] here, then connect with /server irc.surrealchat.net +6697
- for X-Chat, edit the entry in the server list, and change the ports to 6697, then select Use SSL for all servers on this network and Accept invalid SSL certificate
- To use SSL in Colloquy, click the Drop Down Details Arrow and check the SSL box, making sure to accept invalid and self-signed SSL certificates. Also make sure to use port 6697 or 7001
